Summoning a retired 85-year-old scientist before Congress under subpoena isn't about legislative oversight. It’s a continuation of Donald Trump’s campaign of retribution and designed to force a perjury slip.
Dr. Fauci’s transgression: stealing the spotlight during the pandemic and clashing with Trump’s political narrative- namely, that COVID was not lethal and only as dangerous as the common flu. Trump's early denialism arguably cost thousands of American lives. This congressional theater is an attempt to rewrite that history.
There are many things turned upside down by this Regime. Dr. Fauci's achievements in working toward the rapid development of effective therapy for HIV infections is one of the most laudable health achievements in the last century, which has led to the saving of uncountable lives and money. This Regime's cutting back on funding for HIV care and prevention in this country, and around the world, has already cost lives and will result in far more loss of life and money as time passes. How this has happened and by what tribunal it will be judged is not clear, but this is a good lens to clarify opinions.

I can't imagine yesterday's spectacle serves the Senate or the American people in any meaningful way. We should be able to examine decisions without turning public service into personal destruction. If we attack and vilify the very people who dedicate their lives to protecting public health, who will choose that path in the future? Dr. Fauci spent decades fighting infectious diseases and, by many estimates, contributed to saving tens of millions of lives. We need more people willing to do that work, not fewer.

And prominent scientists followed with commentary to the effect that science has concluded that almost certainly the virus originated in the market and not the lab just as Dr Fauci said. A very slight possibility in the lab but that could only be shown if China cooperated just as Dr Fauci has also said. Crazy republicans who like to do "their own research" have pulled conclusions out of thin air just like Trump pulls his statistics.
The quackery lies with the Republican Party, in all policies these incompetent politicians are falling all over each other proving how inept and unqualified they actually are to be anything but a clown show. The fact that Dr. Fauci has actually accomplished something in the eyes of the world galls them. Just listen to what they say — it’s moronic.
It is clear why the MAGA faithful and the GOP want to scapegoat Fauci but not so obvious why the American people are not outraged by his persecution. I believe the reason is a lack of appreciation of the challenge the COVID pandemic presented and how science deals with it. They think that scientists like Fauci know the dynamics of a disease right from the start but, for unspecified nefarious reasons, lie about what they know and when they know it. They don't appreciate that Fauci and his scientists were making recommendations based on their limited, but growing, knowledge of COVID. In some ways, the public suffers from putting too much faith in scientists. Their picture doesn't allow for them to imagine scientists to be perplexed over their subject. The public's ignorance of this process is greatly enhanced by politicians' need to portray the pandemic as under control. Of course, Trump's practice of going immediately to lies made it worse by far but this is something all politicians do in the name of calming the public in a crisis and making themselves look competent and in control.

I may have the details wrong, but my recollection is that the whole Covid discussion went off the rails when the head of the CDC announced in March of the 2020 election year that the virus had appeared and might be dangerous while Trump was in Southeast Asia. On returning to the US Trump announced that Covid was a hoax no worse than a common cold, would be gone by April and CDC's announcement was the result of the deep state based only on Trump Derangement Syndrome. From that time on, any attempt to discuss the virus on any scientific or rational, non-political basis was anathema to MAGA and further evidence of the anti-Trump conspiracy. Down the rabbit hole we went.
Dr. Fauci's is holding the front line in the battle between truth & science vs imagination & superstition. Imagination & superstition has PERFECT confidence. Science determines PROBABILITY that imagined relationships may or may not be true. People demand science to be perfect in order to let go if their imagined relationships & superstitions. They get angry when their imagination & superstions are challenged.

"Risible" is not the adjective I would have chosen. That circus was offensive, grotesque (your word, with which I agree) and very dangerous in that it sought to poison public discourse and rewrite history. Those Republican Senators tried to whitewash Trump's key role in the pandemic. Everything he did, except support the Warp Speed project to fast-track vaccines, was destructive.
The bone of contention is that Fauci testified to congress that he never funded GoF research at Wuhan. This statement was based on a super restrictive definition of what “gain of function” means, and was intentionally deceptive in my opinion. He should have been more open and transparent. Other criticisms of him are mostly BS and done in bad faith.

Fauci was wrong on the values of masks, he influenced the schools to close down for too long, and he lied about the lab leak. Why? Because he didn’t want it revealed he supported such foolish research.
The diaries also reveal him to be a petty man obsessed with making money and fame over giving the public the truth. A truly terrible man.
