On what basis are you 'believing' what t is saying. The 1951 agreement already covers the bases and that agreement lives for the duration of NATO. Hard to believe that the Danes (read the European Union) will accept US (t) approval of decisions. Hopefully the Danes will hold strong and prevent a back-door occupation by the US.

This is about global warming and greater access to Greenland natural resources. Let’s see how long it takes Donny and his brother and the Trump Trust and the band of outlaws do a joint venture to harvest these resources. That is it pure and simple.

Eric Greene's avatar

Maybe it’s because Trump is dumb with a “b” and looks at Mercator projections that show Greenland larger than it is.

Trump is a crackpot who dreams, thinks, and talks the way a crackpot does, and his supporters are just as nuts. Don’t forget Trump has confused Greenland and Iceland in the past, who knows how his scrambled mind works.

Who is a “US adversary” these days?

To be clear, I admire Max’s consistent defence of democracy in an era in which so many other Republicans have abandoned it without a second thought. But I do think Max retains a bit of the old neoconservative worldview in which it was very clear who was on America’s side and who wasn’t. We now live in a world where the president of the US, who presumably represents the country as a whole, is friendlier to the dictators of Russia, China, and North Korea than he is to America’s traditional allies in North America and Europe. That’s why my question above was not meant to be rhetorical. I think it’s in fact an open question these days.

Shhhh, let's all let Cheeto Jeebus think he got a win. He's one ego bruise away from bulldozing the Kennedy Center.

The issue comes from a deal China approached Greenland with in 2019. China offered a loan to build an airport. The size of the loan would be a large share of Greenland’s GDP. China’s use of finance traps like that gave it a lot of leverage in other countries. The possibility of Chinese surveillance and airport access was too much for the US to tolerate.

Trump did an abysmal job of explaining his reasoning. But there is a real geopolitical basis for the US to keep security control over Greenland.

Mayme's avatar

Didn't we already have a base and good presence there?

Chad Bailey's avatar

Yes, but allowing China to install electronic surveillance within an airport they construct would be a major failure of both counterintelligence and of military posture.

William Hancock's avatar

Who said that was ever going to happen? Why does Greenland need a huge airport when they already have an adequate one. It was an idea that China pitched that never went anywhere. Now we are acting like it is a big problem? Puh-lease.

Please read this article.

International relations with dictatorships are essentially anarchistic. There is no way to control how other countries will act.

They are a NATO ally you fucking moron.

Power abhors a vacuum. A weak government like Greenland will be taken by whatever power can take it. With the melting of the arctic that Trump is helping to achieve, the Greenland issue becomes much salient.

LStrong's avatar

Trump’s weakness in his dealings with both Putin and Xi Jinping increases the likelihood that territorial acquisitions by force would be undertaken by hostile powers.

William Hancock's avatar

You are so fucking STUPID. Denmark is a NATO ally and has been from the beginning. I spent months in North Jutland in 1985 working with their special forces. Danish troops were with us in Afghanistan and had per capita, the highest rate of casualties of any of our allies. Denmark is a small country but has stepped up big, both in Afghanistan and in supporting Ukraine against the Russian Nazis.

You are an ignoramus who just quotes other ignoramuses to try to rationalize every stupid fucking thing that Trump does.

William Hancock's avatar

We already had it, since 1951. We used to have seventeen bases there. We closed them for financial reasons, not because we lost permission. Trump is a fucking fool.

Chad Bailey's avatar

I agree with your assessment of Trump. But if China was allowed to construct (and finance) and airport in Greenland, they could spy easily on our bases there. With the finance traps, they could also have leverage over Greenland.

William Hancock's avatar

And if my cock was 28 cm I’d be doing porn. Let’s try to stick to reality. Not everything that is possible is probable. What you describe was never going to happen. It had already been rejected.

William Hancock's avatar

First you were talking about the Chinese, then that lame story got debunked and now you are talking about the Russians? Soon it will be the Martians. The US has had the power to do what it needs to do in Greenland since 1951. So why are we provoking a loyal ally? It is pure stupidity. Trump is working for Putin and doing his bidding. Destabilizing and weakening NATO is Russia's dream and Comrade Krasnov is earning his paycheck. Trump is making the US weaker militarily, economically and diplomatically. You could not script intentionally fucking up the US any better.

Chad Bailey's avatar

It’s a general issue of geopolitics. Yes, China was trying to infiltrate Greenland. Trump’s seizure threats made it more likely that Greenland believed NATO would fracture. That makes Greenland a more attractive target.

I had to look up what Krasnov meant.

William Hancock's avatar

How does that affect anything? Much of that was true during the Cold War as well. And what do you mean they are weaponizing the Kola Peninsula? How could it be any more weaponized than it is? I lived four years in Russian Karelia. It was always weaponized. Most of Russia's nuclear fleet has been in ports on the Barents Sea for the better part of seventy years. You are talking old news. And given that we have had pretty much unlimited access to Greenland by treaty since 1951, what has changed? We used to have seventeen bases in Greenland. We closed all but one at the end of the Cold War, not because Denmark made us but because they were expensive to operate and deemed redundant.

You're hopelessly ill-informed and just spouting a bunch of nonsense.

William Hancock's avatar

Who told you that was ever seriously considered by the Danes? Forty years ago I spent a few months in Denmark training with their special forces. They are not idiots. They didn’t need Trump to tell them not to let China in. Trump thinks because he is completely ignorant, everyone else must be also. This is a straw man argument. Conjure up something that has already been ruled out and act like it is a serious threat. It is absurd.

Chad Bailey's avatar

The commitment problem remains.

William Hancock's avatar

Worry about the Russian asset in the White House, not the Danes, you fucking dope. Trump's Pentagon just shipped a bunch of F-35 parts through Hong Kong (part of China) where, big surprise, they disappeared. So now the Chinese know more about our most closely guarded weapons than they should. It isn't the Danes who are fucking us up, it is Comrade Krasnov and the incompetent idiots he has put in charge of the Pentagon and Intelligence Community.

The Carnegie Endowment article is about Trump threatening to take over Greenland. Entirely separate issue from what I’m discussing. I don’t support us taking over a free country, but also realize that our liberal order is not recognized by China and Russia.

Kindly refrain from ad hominem comments please. Let’s talk ideas.

This is a HUGE mistake, trump will not stop there. He will want more. Terrible decision.

William Hancock's avatar

We’ve had all that by treaty since 1951. Trump didn’t get anything we didn’t already have. He was just too stupid to realize there was a treaty.

The new map projection system, which shows a much smaller area for Greenland than Mercator projection, made the real estate deal less attractive for the Vanity President.

Since the U.S. has had the ability to gear up its military to any level per agreement with Denmark and the Greenland people, this “agreement” is only as useful as Trump waking-up someday pissed about not having his name on another public building and demand he become the Archduke of Icebergland.

It’s also about Trump’s broligarchs desire for their own country, where they can pillage natural resources without any government interference. These societal parasites are buying islands, building bunkers and bribing weak governments all over the world. Many (probably not enough) people are becoming aware of the huge costs to humanity that AI is and questioning the trade of jobs and environmental degradation for a technology which is not sufficiently controlled or understood. They have been whispering in his ear for a long time. Destroying the world would be his ultimate coup de grace. Sadly!
